Sony has filed a patent application for a motor-powered, balance-steered skateboard which could mean competition for the Segway Human Transporter. Separate Electric motors will power two wheels on either side of a flat board. The skate board will respond to how the rider shifts his weights. There will be four pressure sensors on either side of the board. These will react to the manner in which the rider shifts his weight.

The sensors will control the motors, for instance when the rider is standing straight all four sensors will return the same reading and the board will remain steady, if the rider leans forward, the motors run in the forward direction. If you lean back, the wheels rotate backwards. There are options of a modified board with three or four wheels which offer more stability and even two separate boards, which will require some practice and skill to maneuver on the street.
